A revered nautical philosopher explained it well, "I yam what I yam And that's all what I yam."

Okay. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. I was very shy, am still shy yet I was an effective trial lawyer. A friend’s sister is a schizophrenic and needs medication. People may label but two things can be true; 1 get over yourself and take care of yourself; 2 get help if you want it or think you need it.

Wow, this really just perpetuates the mental health stigma by mixing it up with culture or the lack thereof of some people. Also, just unprofessionally mixing health conditions and health disciplines under what is more than one umbrella. Not your line of work, but really you are doing exactly what you are complaining about.

Just treat people as you would want to be treated. Likely, you prefer to be understood.

I retired from a career in law enforcement. To hold someone accountable for actions taken was the bedrock of my work. Sometimes that meant those working in the field, to the betterment of that role. But whatever facts were presented, the individual usually had an excuse, and it rarely held up to objective scrutiny.

Bedrock is hard and it is poor for cultivating. Much of the push in public health is the need for people to have a resource other than law enforcement to deal with a mental health crisis. Thus 988 not just 911. Not every problem is a nail and not every solution a hammer. I think a lot of LE gets that, but the reality is people, kids, children often end up destroyed as the result of a health problem being treated as a criminal matter. A 14 year old having their first psychotic break due to a genetic condition resulting in a life long disability (vegetable) from LE intervention has absolutely nothing to do with what you are talking about. this is why people have the autism stickers on their windows now too. But you already knew that. (And yes, I just crossed over to another discipline)

You don't. Just follow the golden rule. Respect people. Listen to people. If its too much for you, don't engage.
