As a civilian, I think the cheapest thing for China to do and the hardest for China to do is make the mainland a place so attractive the Taiwanese ask to associate or join. No hardware required. A hard, say impossible, change in the political structure. I see this also applying to Russia/Ukraine. Leaders are sometime so F'ing stupid.
