Bryan: Hunting dogs have a DNA connection that tells them to cover up their own scent, meld in with the quarry, have the opportunity to attack even when up-wind. They want to smell like 'ass', carcass, urine, whatever...to mask their BO.
Michael is correct. The Spaniels™ cannot help themselves when it comes to fresh deer poop (which is in abundance in the Salamander country hunting estates where we walk off leash) and I am not sure of a way this can be fixed unless I have a training collar on them and I head out with the expressed purpose of training them to not do this.
Also, your resolutions for the new year are sound.
