"I sorta have a one-track mind, and when faced with a truly historical moment in the history of our Republic (sitting Presidents don’t drop out of races all that often), I think about how this political earthquake might impact my beloved United States Navy."
This is pretty much what I've seen from most atheist senior officers.
When you have nothing higher to serve, like GOD, then the Navy becomes "Peremtorius Ultimus". Something will ALWAYS fill a man's need for GOD, if not GOD, then something lesser. The Bible gets replaced in the mind of non-believer with military "Core Values" ...
EXCELLENT Core Values, by the way - but which become liquid when wielded by today's Senior Officer Corps and their whip-masters in the Dimmocritic party. The kind of core values that allow a nation to MURDER seven innocent Afghan kids, call it a "righteous strike" and move on with life without even a morsel of accountability or regret.
The Navy - what is it there for? In the 1776 view, it exists to serve a Democratic Mercantile Republic. Somewhere along the way, without ever a vote being taken, the mission of the Navy was changed by the superclass (to which every good senior military officer aspires) to the maritime enforcement arm of the International Rules Based Order (IRBO) - which only exists now in comedy skits.
But we have to PRETEND the IRBO still exists, otherwise, what would retired military officers have to do with a Navy that simply does one thing ... to protect the maritime interests of the United States of America? The Navy should be used in the exact same way that Thomas Jefferson wielded it, and TJ was never interested in what China was doing on sand bars.
By the way, we ALL know that these Chinese military constructions on sand bars could be 100% annihilated on day one by our SSGN's, right? They're a five a minute distraction.
It gets better though, because the CENTERPIECE of our little "play navy" shall be BILLION DOLLAR aircraft carriers, that aren't mission capable on day one of almost any war, due to area denial. The way will have to be cleared for them by the very "un-fun" submarine fleet, which hides beneath the waves where you can't see 'em. NOT FUN!!
But, at least they are capable of doing that. In fact, the biggest Tomahawk launching platform the Navy has now is the SSGN - even bigger than the Aegis Cruiser.
Of course, in the current paradigm, what's a Navy unless you appoint idiots to run it, like the Biden administration. Four years ago, some smart military officers were duped into supporting the election of a corpse as Commander In Chief. A corpse, animated by the Dimmocritic party and it's regime media.
Now those same officers will claw over themselves to vote for an airhead - who's IQ freezes water, animated into stardom and leadership by ... the Dimmocritic Party and it's regime media.
Whatever you do ... DO NOT VOTE FOR ORANGE MAN BAD because he was MEAN to senior military officers when he was President!! He held them accountable. Embarrassed them when they made horrible decisions. Of course the officers are angry about this - because in their mind, they can be taught nothing, because they learned everything long ago.
What good is a larger Navy if you have no clue what it’s for? On one hand we have a pair of jokers that would have made Lindbergh proud and on the other a person who has never devoted one passing thought to what all those big gray boats are used for. I’m sorry that Matt Pottinger put all that effort into a book (“The Boiling Moat”) that none of the above will read. Chairman Brown said a couple of days ago that we are ready to take on the PRC. Wow. I’m glad that I’m an aged dude who will hopefully miss the way this ends. My conscience is clear, I sent money to and voted for Nikki.
Well said! But Kamala Harris seems to be locked in, so our choices are her or the convicted felon whose closest worshipers tell him that he may ignore the law, the Constitution, and the courts with impunity.
True. Ship building takes a long time. In addition the Navy keeps changing what it wants, usually half way though or near the end. Kind of like building Nuclear Power Plants. Get a design, stick with it. Something better comes along build the next ship to that design. Best is the enemy of better to quote an old saying. way. Air Force does similar things. Quantity counts as much as quality. Somewhere along the way that idea was forgotten. I wonder if working with allies on building the smaller ships would be the way to go in producing more ships. The Navy also seems stuck on the idea of all submarines must be nuclear even though modern electrics can be quieter and operate as well in shallower waters.
Unfortunately, I don’t envision either major party candidate being good for the Navy. I think the only thing which will save us is a rapid economic and demographic collapse in China leading to us winning the great power competition without a fight.
For those of you lusting for convention blood here is some of the rules:
But what observers often miss is that under the existing rules, the convention will already be “open.” Any candidate willing to run who can identify 300 delegates (no more than 50 from any one state) supporting them can have her or his name placed in nomination. This would be true for either a “virtual roll call” (what the DNC is currently planning for the week after August 1) or for a traditional convention roll call.
The flip side of this open process is important, too: Biden’s stepping aside means there is no mechanism for him to transfer support to Kamala Harris or anyone else. If Democrats think his endorsement of Harris as the nominee is a bad idea and someone’s willing to go public with a challenge and can amass 300 delegates, the nomination could go elsewhere. So you don’t really have to invent some elaborate new process to hold an “open convention”; the 300-delegate requirement operates as both a window for competition and a limitation on chaos.
Bryan, you're absolutely correct that we need to build a lot more fully armed ships - now. To achieve this strategic objective requires that:
- The President makes a larger Navy a top priority in the budget.
- The President appoints a strong SECNAV who will effectively advocate for the Navy with SECDEF and
Congress - as John Lehman did for the 600-ship Cold War fleet.
- SECNAV appoints an ASN(RDA) highly experienced in ship design and shipbuilding who will deal
effectively with the bureaucracy and with industry - as George Sawyer did for the 600-ship Cold
War fleet.
- SECNAV and CNO reconstitute the Ship Characteristics Improvement Board (SCIB, successor to the
General Board mentioned in your recent article about Project 2025) to put the warfighters in the
leadership role throughout the acquisition process for determining what ship types and what ship
characteristics are required - as OPNAV did for the 600-ship Cold War fleet.
- SECNAV and CNO reconstitute the Navy's "Ship Design Factory" - as NAVSEA did in producing the
designs of the 600-ship Cold War fleet.
The following abstract from a September 2019 Naval Engineers Journal paper describes why the "Ship Design Factory" is so critical to achieving the National Security Strategic Objective of a larger Navy:
The Navy’s Ship Design Factory: NAVSEA—The “Golden Goose”
What do “factory” and the “Golden Goose” fable have to
do with ship design and the Navy? The well-known Aesop
fable of killing the Golden Goose accentuates the folly of a
short-sighted action that destroys a unique asset - a lesson
just as relevant today. In our paper the asset we describe
is the “Ship Design Factory” led by the Naval Sea Systems
Command (NAVSEA) and its predecessor organizations
which designed the World Wars I and II fleets (Kuehn,
2008) and the Cold War fleet. For many decades the Navy
mitigated the enormous number of uncertainties associated
with complex warships and ensured their timely design and
construction by adopting a marked different acquisition
strategy than other weapon systems. We will describe
the time-tested Office of the Chief of Naval Operations
Someone, somehow, has to get Trumps attention pointed towards the Navy for longer than a sound bite. Someone needs to show him the depth of the idiocy in procurement (among other topics) long enough for him to get a true view of the clusterf*** it is, and raise his ire about it. We need to get him to see the military as important, and get him to adopt it as his pet project. Let's offer up the military as a great place to turn rhetoric into action. Stamping out DEI, reducing waste and fraud, streamlining procurement, and holding the Pentagon bigwigs accountable would be good for the country, and would make most Americans happy (except for that DEI part). We need to get some navalists.on his radar, and get some discussions on his schedule. With the right assistance and coaching about how important our Navy is, he could be the Teddy R we need.
Coupled with that, we need to push our Congress to hold the Navy accountable for past and current failures, and start weeding out those in the Admiralty that aren't focused on anything but combat capabilities and warfighting excellence.
Lots of potential here... we just need to figure out how to make it happen!!
Why not reach out to the other members of the commission and see if they want to meet up? Its a free country, piss some people off.
The error now being made by the dems is not swearing Kamala in. We will now have calls to invole the 25th and attempts to investigate or impeach from the house wasting news cycles for too much of the time left. As POTUS she could prove herself or fail. She would be de facto head of the party, incumbant, and first woman president. She wind the age debate and can pick a strong running mate which was Biden’s second biggest problem. Needs to be a swing state dem governor ideally Evers or Shapiro.
"As POTUS she could prove herself or fail." Exactly. I suspect that there are enough Dems that are leery of her demonstrated skillset to not want to take that chance. DC is all about puffery, bluff, and obfuscation, much like the National Commission on the Future of the Navy, rather than honest work to govern a country that most of us want to be successful. Aside from the pure corruption that we see peek its head above the muck every now and then, of course.
I think reality will be we need a President who can put in long hours before the election happens if not certainly prior to swearing in a new administration. Our enemies foreign and domestic will be hard at work.
What's the basis for thinking the Republicans will win the House and Senate? My understanding of polling results is that in down ballot races, Democrats have been polling better than Biden, and now with improved presidential chances, this will improve the down ballot as well. There's not a lot of data out there that I could quickly find, but it did seem to point to Senate Democrats polling better - but there is some severe bias in the selection of states that have been polled.
You may want to dismiss the Freedom Caucus' "Heckler's Veto", but we NEED to pay attention to the issues that the Freedom Caucus bring attention to like cutting spending. They are RIGHT in calling for the Speaker of the House fulfilling his promises. We cannot afford to continue business as usual. What we need to do to elect enough real conservatives so that we can ignore the RINO's veto and fix the problems in the Federal Government and the economy before it is too late.
With respect, that's the same sort of thinking that led to the Freedom Caucus having a heckler's veto. And what does electing "real conservatives" mean? The word "conservative" doesn't mean anything today. It means a neo-Nazi, a white supremacist, a Christian nationalist, an Islamophobe, a xenophobe, a mouthpiece for Vladimir Putin, someone who wants to tear up NATO, someone who wants to ban books like "Huckleberry Finn" and "To Kill a Mockingbird," a congressperson who blows through spending limits as long as the spending is for "our" stuff, or maybe it doesn't mean anything at all. I'm a lifetime conservative, but since that doesn't mean anything anymore, I go by "classical liberal."
Sorry, but you are absolutely wrong. Moreover, you are playing the same game as the leftists in the Democrat Party. I have seen so many Republicans campaign on fiscal responsibility and limited government, but the reality is that the RINOs sabotage every attempt to actually get the Federal Government and its runaway spending under control. The Freedom Caucus plays a very important role in holding the feet of the GOP leadership to the fire and forcing them to honor their promises to the people who voted them in to CUT SPENDING AND BIG GOVERNMENT. The Freedom Causus is not made up of neo-Nazis, white supremacists, xenophobes or any of the other slanderous names that the Leftists choose to use instead of the truth. The RINO’s who owe their allegance to the political establishment rather than to the people who elected them are the true purveyors of the ‘heckler’s veto’. You call yourself a classical liberal. How about becoming a common sense patriot instead? We cannot afford to keep spending like drunken sailors any longer. We can accept a little pain now and cut spending when it is relatively easy or we can do what YOU want and wait until America is completely fiscally insolvent. Then the American people will be forced to deal with draconian cuts that will be extraordinarily painful. That is what the ‘heckler’s’ of the Freedom Caucus have been trying to warn about. I guess you and the rest of the political Establishment just don’t want to listen.
"The Freedom Caucus plays a very important role in holding the feet of the GOP leadership to the fire and forcing them to honor their promises to the people who voted them in to CUT SPENDING AND BIG GOVERNMENT.
(OPNAV) user-driven, NAVSEA-led ship design acquisition
strategy, NAVSEA’s leadership in developing naval ship
design capabilities, and Navy-industry collaborative
relationships which culminated in the successful buildup to
the 600-ship Navy.
The “Golden Goose”, however, was all but destroyed in
the 1990s under the banner of Acquisition Reform following
the end of the Cold War. The argument that “warships
are different” fell on deaf ears. The Navy’s 1200-plus staff
of highly experienced naval engineers at NAVSEA was
cut by over 75% and industry assumed more and more
responsibility for all ship design. “Failure” is not too strong
a word to characterize the results of this twenty-five-year
experiment (Fox, 2011). The U.S. has expended nationally significant
treasure and irreplaceable time to develop and
field a number of warships poorly suited to effectively and/
or efficiently meet the defense challenges of coming decades.
At the recent 2019 Surface Navy Association meeting, the
Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) accentuated the sense of
urgency that the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) has been
emphasizing (Clark, 2017)—time is the one resource we do
not have. SECNAV also stressed the importance of ensuring
we use the resources we have to significantly increase
the return-on-investment (ROI) for both warfighting
effectiveness and efficiency.
But the “Golden Goose” is not dead. We will describe
the many strategic initiatives taken over the past twenty-five
years by the leadership of NAVSEA, the Office of
Naval Research (ONR), and the Naval Surface Warfare
Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) that revived and
has sustained the Navy’s in-house early stage ship design
capabilities. To meet the urgency of the Navy’s senior
leaders, we will examine why we use the term “design
factory” by approaching the ship design and construction
process as a manufacturing process where we can exploit
tools and concepts such as the Just-In-Time (JIT) and Lean
manufacturing revolution which has dramatically decreased
factory cycle times, reduced in-process inventories and
increased ROI.
Finally, we will describe a proposed “21st Century
Warship Design, Manufacturing, and Acquisition Strategy”
that builds on NAVSEA and industry’s core capabilities
as well as best practice for the design and acquisition of
complex engineered products. The strategy includes an
Integrated Product Team (IPT) for early-stage design;
a Robust Contract Design package; a modern Warship
Manufacturing Strategy; early shipbuilder, combat system
integrator, and propulsion system integrator engagement;
and, a Flag Level Executive Review Board.
We conclude the single most critical capability that will
allow the NAVSEA “Golden Goose” to continue to produce
the “Golden Eggs” of timely, technically feasible, basic
warship designs that meet the OPNAV user-driven needs is
sustaining a wellspring of highly experienced ship design
engineers at NAVSEA, NSWCCD and the other Warfare
Centers and their collaborative relationship with industry.
